11/16/2016 – Dr. Yadollahi was invited to speak at the 2016 Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Fall Forum at Toronto Rehab.
On Saturday, November 12th, Toronto Rehab and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers jointly hosted the 2016 Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Fall Forum at Toronto Rehab.
The Ontario population is aging and this shift in demographic will change health care and biotechnology. Therefore, this year’s forum was focused to showcase three women engineers and entrepreneurs working to address this demographic shift through their cutting-edge work in biotechnology, health care, and life sciences. Dr. Milica Radisic, Professor at the University of Toronto presented new advances in tissue engineering to improve cardiac disorders. Dr. Azadeh Yadollahi, Scientist at the Toronto Rehab, discussed her research about new technologies to improve breathing disorders during sleep. Dr. Foteini Agrafioti, Chief Science Office at RBC presented her work on developing and commercializing new biometric based on electrocardiogram signature.
The Honourable Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges—Markham and Minister of Community and Social Services was the last speaker. She discussed the importance of the active role of women in engineering and leadership responsibilities. She also discussed the effects of shift in demographic on community and social services.
The event was very successful, and more than 40 engineers from a broad spectrum of expertise attended the event. Special thanks to Hilary Whiting and Catharine Hancharek for organizing the event.

21/09/2015 – Dr. Shokrollahi has been appointed as the new Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Toronto Section
Congratulations! Mehrnaz Shokrollahi, Post-Doctoral Fellow, has been elected the Chair of IEEE Signal Processing Chapter, Toronto Section. Previously vice chair, she will be responsible for organizing Conferences, Distinguished Lectures, Workshops, Journal Clubs, and other activities. She will also attend the annual IEEE Signal Processing Society meetings that take place in IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP). She has been an active member and has served on various committees of the IEEE since 2008.
While doing her PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering at Ryerson she won an award for her innovative device that can detect heart attacks in drivers. Her device monitors the driver’s heartbeat, blood pressure and appearance, and automatically connects to emergency services with the vehicle’s location, if a problem is detected. She has completed the market research and is working on designing the prototype.
Mehrnaz is being supervised by Dr. Azadeh Yadollahi and Dr. Frank Rudzicz and her current focus is to develop advanced signal processing and machine learning algorithms to investigate breathing disorders during sleep. She will incorporate her solid background to develop a novel wearable device to monitor intensity and duration of daily activity, sleep apnea severity, and vital physiological signals including respiratory rate and intensity.
